Coming 2023

Are you interested in learning how to use tools that will help address society’s most pressing problems? Competency with computational methods has become an essential skill set in research and careers aimed at solving complex environmental and social issues. These include, but are not limited to, providing affordable housing, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving access to economic opportunity, conserving natural habitats, rectifying environmental injustices, and ensuring political representation. This class will introduce a widely-used coding language in data science, the R Programming language. Through the course, students will learn how to use R to access rich datasets, prepare data for analysis and visualization, and accurately interpret findings. The class’s final project will be a data-driven presentation centered around a social or environmental problem of particular interest to each student. Students will learn standard tests and models in data science and this course is best suited for students in the equivalent of 11th and 12th grades; however, no previous experience with statistics or computer science is required.
