What is Community Building and Why is it Important?

Community building is all about creating a sense of belonging and support among a group of people. For girls, it’s especially important because it helps them feel empowered and valued. This creates a positive impact in the community by connecting people across diverse geographies, backgrounds, and ages.

What is Community Building?

Strong communities connect people across diverse geographies, backgrounds and ages. They create spaces where individuals can share experiences, learn from one another and grow together. For girls especially, community building plays a powerful role in helping them feel empowered confident and supported as they grow

At its core, community building is about relationships that allow people to take risks, try new things and show up for our full selves.

Why is Community Building Important?

When community building is done well, it creates trust and accountability. Whether people are playing on the same team or collaborating on a project, the community provides a supportive environment for growth and goal-oriented action.

Community is also the foundation for advocacy and leadership. Activism of any kind requires collective passion, mutual support, and shared action. Community building fosters those social ties and builds trust based on a common purpose.

Probably most importantly, community building creates safe spaces to listen actively, uplift one another, amplify voices, and share ideas. These experiences help girls develop confidence, curiosity and a strong sense of self – qualities that stay with them long after a program or experience ends.

Some meaningful ways to build community can include:

  • Volunteering – donating your time is an excellent way to make connections with people you might otherwise not have met and create bonds over a cause you have a mutual interest in.
  • Host a gathering – whether it’s for a fun social gathering or an event with purpose, making a space where people can feel seen, heard and valued is one of the most effective ways to build community.
  • Show up to community events – keeping yourself in the loop with local events being held in your city is an excellent way to show your face in the community and get to know the people who are as invested as you are.

How does Summer Camp Build Community?

Summer camp is a natural home for community building. It’s one of the few places where campers are invited to be present, to lean in, and to foster friendships.

At camp, community shows up as partnerships: new friendships formed over shared experiences, laughter and learning. It shows up as growth, when campers are encouraged to try something new, take healthy risks and step into new leadership roles. It shows up as curiosity, as campers explore new ideas, skills and perspectives together. And it shows up, constantly, as joy!

Camp communities are built through everyday moments: cheering each other on, solving problems together, celebrating wins big and small, and learning how to navigate challenges as a group. These experiences help campers understand what it means to belong and how powerful it can feel to be part of something bigger than themselves.

How do We Build Community at Porter’s Summer Camps?

For all of our summer camps, community building isn’t just an add-on: it’s at the heart of everything we do.

We start with small camper groups, intentionally designed so that every camper is known, supported, and celebrated. Our counselors build strong relationships with their groups creating spaces where girls feel comfortable being themselves and trying new things.

We lean into traditions that bring campers together – from Color Wars to Morning Rallies, shared experiences spark excitement, teamwork, and lasting memories. These moments become touchstones of connection, celebration and belonging.

Sisterhood grows through new friendships, counselor groups, and collaborative activities that encourage empathy, communication, and mutual support. Campers learn how to show up for one another and how good it feels when you show up for others.

Our programs emphasize hands-on learning, giving girls opportunities to explore, create, and problem solve together. Whether they’re working on a project, learning a new skill, or diving into a shared challenge, campers build confidence and connection side by side.

And of course, we prioritize joy and fun. Laughter, playing, and celebrating are powerful community builders, and at camp, we do all three!

Through these experiences, our campers don’t just participate in a program: they become a part of a community- one that supports their growth, fuels their curiosity, and reminds them where they belong.
