Creating change in the world and attempting to understand how, as young people, you can make a difference is at the center of being a camper in the Institute for Global Education (IGE) program at Summer in Farmington. The world is such a complex and, at times, troubled place, mixed with amazing innovations and incredible stories. IGE takes all these complexities and creates an environment for young women to explore how they can make a difference.
In one of our first days of the program, campers explore the idea of human rights and create their own list of what they believe every human should have access to. These activities build into a larger discussion on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and a deeper understanding of how those rights are not necessarily attainable for all people.

Our diverse group of campers helps to create really insightful conversations about places around the world and allows girls to self-reflect on their own experiences. The film Girl Rising is the perfect follow-up to these discussions. With this film, campers can better understand how difficult it is for women around the world to achieve equality.

We then take these ideas about Human Rights and connect them to the program’s larger goal, understanding the role the United Nations plays. Early in the program, campers attend a trip to the United Nations in New York and have access to guest speakers.

A key piece of this trip and the overall program is understanding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) the UN is currently working to achieve. These seventeen goals are the primary focus of the campers’ final project for the program. Each camper is able to follow their passions and interests and connect those to two of the SDG. This project enables campers to understand how these goals can be achieved while also learning how they can be a part of that success.

For 2025, the IGE is expanding with two weeks of programming! Be sure to check them out and secure your spot today!
