How do advocacy and action drive change?

Change doesn’t just happen. It’s the result of intentional action by individuals who are passionate about the issues and making a difference.

At PCGL, we know that advocacy and action are the driving forces behind meaningful change in the world and thought it would be worth talking about what makes good advocacy and the types of action that can help facilitate change.

Advocacy is using your power and agency to speak up and support a cause you believe in, ultimately amplifying the message you support and increasing awareness of the issue among more people.

Effective advocacy comes when people are able to hear and trust the message enough to want to take action themselves.

This comes when you have taken the time to identify the issues that align with your values, educate yourself on the multi-faceted nature of those issues, and learn how to articulate what changes need to be made in order to make progress.

Changing hearts and minds isn’t easy, which is why most movements for change happen over the years and require a steadfast commitment of action from their supporters. Action on an issue can encompass a variety of things, such as:

Petitions

Find and sign petitions related to your values that center the voice of those most impacted and encourage others to do the same.

Protests

Participate in a march or rally, or organize your own.

Engage government officials

You can participate in or organize letter-writing campaigns to your local, regional, and national representatives or participate in open floor discussions at their meetings.

Volunteering

Volunteer for non-governmental organizations working to make the change you hope to see, or volunteer for the campaigns of government officials who support the issues you care about.

Monetary donations

Donate to non-governmental organizations that are actively making a difference with the issues you care about.

Divestment from bad actors

Elevate and uplift the voices of those most impacted and affected by the issue and who are often without the power or means to tell their own stories. Use your sphere of influence and financial support to move the needle forward.

Passion is the driving force that helps you discover your purpose, and we at PCGL are here to help you identify and harness that passion. Our mission is to empower girls and women to create a positive impact in the world. By aligning your passion with your purpose, you can unlock your full potential and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
